Group Fights Hate Crime at Lehigh University

Some Lehigh University students say the campus is too intolerant -- so they've formed a group to try and change the campus culture.
It's called "The Movement" and it's gaining momentum.
WFMZ's Mike Lowe has more on the story.
"The Movement" is actually a group of about 75 Lehigh University students.
(:46) "It's totally a group of students that are fed up with a lack of diversity on campus."
(25:14) "The goal is really to increase diversity and understanding. In the Fall there were some bias related incidents that we're really trying to abolish."
Students say that this year Lehigh has seen a number of acts of intolerance toward campus minorities.
(18:40) "There have been hate crimes against homosexual people."
(1:38) "Raical slurs have been written on Lehigh campus walls."
(16:33) "If I were not white I'd feel uncomfortable saying 'can I join you guys?'
(STAND UP)
Organizers say "The Movement" is gaining momentum here on campus and part of that is raising awareness.
The group has plastered the campus with fliers asking students to "rise up."
They're staging a campus-wide walk-out in mid-march to bring attention to what they say are growing problems of racism and homophobia on campus.
(2:02) "We'll have a better understanding if it's a more diverse campus so I think students are just going to take it into their own hands. The administration has done its part now it's up to the students."
In addition to the campus fliers, the group has also created a web site.
For its part, the administration is also addressing the issue.
It has launched its own diversity initiative.
....and in a statement to the University's president and provost say:
"Lehigh University will continue to make it a top priority to make our campus community more diverse for study and working."
The campus is more than 80 percent white -- and routinely ranked as one of the least diverse in the country.
And Brehm says that's evidence that the university's diversity strategy has not worked.
(2:39) "There's something culturally wrong here at Lehigh and that needs to change."
Brahm suggests starting with retooling the recruiting process.
