IT'S BEEN 15 YEARS SINCE CONGRESS PASSED THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT - TOMORROW MARKS THE ACTUAL ANNIVERSARY. THIS WEEK - WALKS AROUND TOWN ARE SHOWCASING HOW FAR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES HAVE COME AND HOW FAR THERE IS STILL LEFT TO GO.
WFMZ'S Karin Mallett HAS OUR STORY.
NATS: CHANTING
\ REPORTER:
LOOKING AT LIFE FROM ANOTHER POINT OF VIEW CAN CHANGE THE WAY YOU SEE THINGS.
ADRIANNE GRETH: 11:30
"IT'S A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE OF ALMOST EVERYTHING."
\ REPORTER:
ADRIANNE GRETH, WHO WAS HERE ON BEHALF OF STATE REPRESENTATIVE TOM CALTIGARONE, CAN WALK - BUT SHE SPENT THE MORNING IN A WHEELCHAIR.
ADRIANNE GRETH: 11:02
"I NEVER REALIZED EXACTLY HOW DIFFERENT IT IS FOR SOMEONE TO BE IN A WHEELCHAIR AND MANEUVER AROUND THE STREETS OF READING.
IT'S NOT JUST THE PHYSICAL ASPECT- IT'S THE ASPECT OF CONSTRUCTION OF THE ROAD AND THE BUMPS IN THE SIDEWALKS AND THAT SORT OF THING AND THAT'S A CHALLENGE FOR ME."
\ REPORTER:
THE WHEELCHAIR RIDE AND WALK WAS DESIGNED TO POINT OUT THE OBSTACLES THAT STILL EXIST AND AT THE SAME TIME -
NATS OF CHANTING: "CELEBRATE"
\ REPORTER:
CELEBRATE WHAT'S BEEN OVERCOME.
RALPH TRAINER: 31:50
"THERE'S ALWAYS SOMETHING TO DO WHETHER YOU'RE IN READING, WHETHER YOU'RE IN BERKS COUNTY FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES.
THE EFFORT IS GOING TO BE THERE UNTIL ATTITUDES CHANGE, WE'RE ACCEPTED AS INDIVIDUALS, WE'RE ACCEPTED AS PEOPLE. "
STANDUP: 33:26
BETWEEN CONSTRUCTION, CURB CUTS AND SIDEWALKS- NAVIGATING THE COURSE CAN BE DIFFICULT.
IN THIS 20 FEET ALONE ALONG READING'S SCHYULKILL AVENUE, THERE'S OVERGROWN BRUSH, UNEVEN PAVEMENT AND PLENTY OF TRASH THAT ABILITIES IN MOTION SAYS IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY.
EMILY GILLIS: 26:20
"EVERYDAY THERE'S SOMEONE WALKING TO WORK, EVERY DAY THERE'S SOMEONE WALKING TO THE GROCERY STORE OR WALKING TO THE PHARMACY WHAT HAVE YOU, SO IT REALLY IS UP TO EVERYBODY HERE TO BE A LITTLE BIT MORE CONSCIOUS OF THAT."
NATS OF PROCLAMATION
\ REPORTER:
ABILITIES IN MOTION SAYS LOCAL AND STATE RECOGNITION OF THE ORGANIZATION AND ITS EFFORTS HELPS.
NATS OF WALK
\ REPORTER:
THE WALK AROUND READING SIMPLY LETS YOU WALK A MILE IN THEIR SHOES.
IN READING, Karin Mallett 69 NEWS BERKS EDITION.
