One Tank Trip: Ringing Rocks Park
Doo Wop in the 50s, psychedelic in the 70s and hair bands in the 80s. It's music that defines generations. But there's one genre, formed millions of years ago, that has withstood the test of time. WFMZ's Karin Mallett tries to break into the music business her latest One Tank Trip to Ringing Rocks Park.  >> REPORTER: Strike one of these and all you get is a thud. But boulders that are shoulder to shoulder are ringing rocks.

>> CRAIG OLSEN: There are people who come out here from time to time and try to make some music on the rocks, so it's really unique, it's a neat place to visit.

>> REPORTER: And a draw for geologists and the curious. Ringing Rocks Park in Upper Black Eddy, Bucks County is an earthly phenomenon. No one knows for certain why the rocks ring, but naturalist Craig Olsen says it's partly because the boulders are volcanic rocks that 12,000 years ago, cooled very quickly and crystals formed.

>> OLSEN: Almost like steel, like a steel bell. But they were formed very tightly and that's really the main reason why these rocks ring.

>> REPORTER: And since no two boulders here are the same, depending on which rock you hit, you'll get a different tone.

>> OLSEN: The rocks that are popular are just the ones that are very, very worn.

>> REPORTER: Ringing chips away at the rocks, but leaves you with a tune. Since my musical talents leave much to the imagination, we turned to our resident drummer, One Tank Trip photojournalist Patrick Manwiller. We're now trying to keep him from going on tour. We brought our own hammers for the day but Craig says visitors' who forget their tools often get creative.

>> OLSEN: They go back to the car and they get like a tire iron or something and they are out here with a tire iron ringing.

>> REPORTER: Rock stars in the making, with an impromptu concert in the park. Making music on a One Tank Trip to Ringing Rocks Park in Bucks County, Karin Mallett 69 News Berks Edition.

We'd like to thank 69 News viewers Tom Luke and Tara Mayers for the suggestion. Karin only had to travel 130 miles to get to the park and back to downtown Reading.
