Course Gives Hands-On Training In Processing Crime Scenes
It's a learning experience not meant for the squeamish. Local law enforcement agencies are brushing up on the ABC's of blood. The lesson comes courtesy of the University of Tennessee National Forensic Science Institute. The goal is helping crimefighters get the bad guys faster.   >> REPORTER To a trained eye..drops of blood leave more than just a splatter. Showtime's hit series Dexter revolves around it...

>> DEXTER: Probably a sharp knife, look at blood splatter it tells a story.

>> REPORTER: From the table, to the floor to the ceiling...this week... blood is also leaving it's mark at Northampton County Community College.

>> JEFF: Many times when come to a scene you don't know what will be important and what will not.

>> REPORTER: Forensic Scientist and longtime blood splatter analyst Jeff Gurvis is teaching local law enforcement how to.. in essence read blood.

>> JEFF: So when crime scene investigators, death investigators come to a crime scene they can look at blood stain patterns on the walls, ceilings, floors to help determine how things unfold at a crime scene.

>> REPORTER: Blood splatter analysis can be traced to high profile murder cases.. Such as the trials of Ohio Doctor Sam Sheppard in 1954 and OJ Simpson in 1995.

>> JEFF: There will be a statement saying I found my wife I was consoling her and got blood on me. Does the pattern substantiate of refute those statements?

>> REPORTER: Students here, among them Lehigh County coroner Scott Grim, are photographing, mapping and documenting the stories the drops of blood are telling.

>> Scott: Gives me the foresight of what different instrument is used with different patterns left behind.

>> REPORTER: The 40-hour course might end Friday.. but one thing is for sure... these students.. will never look at blood the same way again.
