One Tank Trip: Pride Of The Susquehanna
One of the best ways to enjoy all that Pennsylvania has to offer is to sit back, relax and let someone else do the driving, or in some cases, steering. And on board the Pride of the Susquehanna, the captain is in charge. WFMZ's Karin Mallett takes us on this week's One Tank Trip.  >> BILL CORNELL: Why do I love this river? Well it's just filled with natural wonders and all kinds of history.

>> REPORTER: The choreographed dance of the paddle wheels have been carrying passengers down the Susquehanna for more than 21 years.

>> CORNELL: The Pride of the Susquehanna was built right here on City Island.

>> REPORTER: As part of a community service project in Harrisburg.. it took two years to build.

>> CORNELL: People came in, welders came in, carpenters came in.

>> REPORTER: And in June of 1988.. the authentic stern driven paddlewheel river boat was launched.

>> CORNELL: This isn't just a boat ride. This is a chance to get out here and enjoy nature and also to learn about the history and the natural wonders of this river.

>> REPORTER: This is a huge riverboat for the Susquehanna, it's 65 feet long, 24 feet wide with 3 foot sides. And these two paddlewheels making all this noise back here at the stern.. that's what gets this 100 ton beauty moving.

>> REPORTER: The riverboat sails three times a day everyday from the end of May to September. And on the 50 minute cruise.. your free to walk around the vessel. Photographs in the main cabin depict the old days. It's a region with ties that date all the way back to the Susquehanook Indians.

>> CORNELL: Archeological digs have shown that Native Americans were using this river 8000 years ago. There's magnificent history associated with this river, around our region, most of which has its origins with this river.

>> REPORTER: And what a way to view it.. Riding the riverboat on a One Tank Trip on board the Pride of the Susquehanna, Karin Mallett 69 News Berks Edition.

ONE WAY TIME: One hour, 15 minutes
ONE WAY DISTANCE: 63 miles
