One Tank Trip: Chaddsford Winery
We're nearing harvest time for vineyards across southeastern Pennsylvania and there's a place where can see how the grape gets from the vine into the glass. It's a unique winery that offers more than just a tasting. WFMZ's Karin Mallett is in Chester County for this week's One Tank Trip to the Chaddsford Winery.   >> REPORTER: They've been making wine here at the Chaddsford Winery for more than 25 years.

>> LEE MILLER: As winemakers everything starts with the grapes.. so first you have to grow the grapes.

>> REPORTER: Naturally then the guided tour starts in the vineyard. The trial vineyard boasts a few of the 10 different varieties grown on the main vineyards just a few miles away.

>> MILLER: The grapes we grow are much more like the European wines.

>> REPORTER: Before these grapes end up in the glass, they have to be picked at just the right time and on the tour you'll learn that just looking at the grapes on the vine doesn't always suffice for a winemaker.

>> MILLER: The winemakers come out and actually test the grapes.

>> REPORTER: And sometimes that requires a little sampling.

>> MILLER: It's kinda sour because it's not ripe enough.

>> REPORTER: straight off the vine.

>> MILLER: Oh but this is much sweeter.. yum this one's good.

>> REPORTER: When they're ready the production begins.. from the tanks to the barrels for aging. But you'll have to pick the right day to crush with your feet.

>> MILLER: Well we do that sometimes, actually sometimes we do it for fun.

>> REPORTER: The Millers started from scratch.

>> MILLER: In this business, you can make wine anywhere but you cannot grow grapes anywhere.

>> REPORTER: When they moved here in 1982 there no wineries in this region.. having to convince others that this part of Pennsylvania could make good, even great wine.. You'll get to sip for yourself in the tasting room.

>> MILLER: so you'll see poeple do this.

>> REPORTER: Learning the 5 "s" for a formal taste or..

 >> MILLER: Otherwise you just sip it and have fun.

>> REPORTER: Making a toast on a One Tank Trip to the Chaddsford Winery in Chester County, Karin Mallett 69 News Berks Edition.
