Mother Accused Of Stabbing Son Heading To Trial
A Montgomery County mother charged with stabbing her son multiple times in the back is heading to trial. Labarbara Cheek waived her right to a preliminary hearing Tuesday afternoon. WFMZ's Joscelyn Moes has the story.

>> REPORTER: Labarbara Cheek was led into Montgomery County District Court with her hands cuffed and feet shackled. The 34-year-old Telford mother is accused stabbing her 12-year- old son multiple times in the back with a 10-inch kitchen knife. It happened September 8th at the Telford Garden Apartments. According to court documents the boy told investigators his mother had been acting strangely for a few days. He said around two in the morning the 8th she pulled him out of bed and started talking quote "crazy" about different religious events. Later that same day around noon, according to court documents, the boy said he woke up and was watching TV when his mother stabbed him. After waiving her right to a preliminary hearing the judge allowed Cheek to spend a few minutes in the courtroom with her family.

>> REPORTER: While Cheek faces attempted murder and other charges officials say her son is living with his father in Maryland and is back in school.

>> J. DAVID FARRELL: I spoke to his father today. The young fellow is doing pretty well from what we hear.

>> J. DAVID FARRELL: It could have been very serious. It could have been about the worst possible scenario.

>> REPORTER: Cheek is currently being held in the medical ward at the Montgomery County Prison.

>> RICHARD HALLOCK: It's a mental health issue.

>> RICHARD HALLOCK: It wasn't like she was defending herself. There's no grand story.

>> TRACEY POTERE: We'll be looking into seeing if there is some sort of mental infirmity or anything of that nature. But her history does not indicate that there has ever been any mental health conditions.

>> REPORTER: Cheek's next court appearance is scheduled for December.
