Yankees Beat Phillies For 3-1 Lead In World Series

The New York Yankees will try to close out the Philadelphia Phillies' quest for a repeat after beating the defending champions 7-4 last night. A.J. Burnett will face Cliff Lee on the mound at Citizens Bank Park tonight. Lee pitched all nine innings for the win in Game One. The odds are against the Phillies repeating as world champions. The last team to overcome a 3-1 defecit was Kansas City in 1985.Chase Utley and Pedro Feliz hit late home runs for the Phillies that tied last night's game at 4.
Then it moved to the ninth and the Phils brought in Brad Lidge. He had been the only closer in the playoffs who hadn't allowed a run. With two outs, the Yankees' Johnny Damon got a hit. The Phillies overshifted their infield to the right side for Mark Teixeira and Damon took off for second. After beating the throw, Damon noticed no one was covering third. That's because Pedro Feliz had handled the throw, and Damon easily beat the third baseman to the bag for a rare double-steal. Lidge then hit Mark Teixeira with a pitch. So up stepped Alex Rodriguez. He was 1 for 13 to that point in his first World Series. Rodriguez lined a double into left for a 5-4 lead. Jorge Posada then followed with a two-run single.
Mariano Rivera got the save for the Yankees in the bottom of the ninth.
"I think we take a lot of pride on being resilient and the way we bounce back," Phils manager Charlie Manuel said. "I've seen us go through it before. We've blown 22 games from the seventh inning on or something this year. That's got to tell you something about the resilience of our team."
