SEPTA Workers Walk Off Job; Trains, Buses Idle

Now that the last World Series game has been played at Citizens Bank Park, transit workers in Philadelphia have walked off the job. SEPTA's largest union went on strike at 3:00 this morning, stranding hundreds of thousands of morning commuters. [ SEPTA Service Interruption Guide ]

Lengthy negotiations on a new contract ended just before midnight. Apparently, it was a difference over wages that led to the walkout. All bus, subway, and trolley service in the city, as well as the Frontier Division buses in Bucks, Montgomery and Chester counties, are affected. The Regional Rail trains will not be interrupted, but there have been delays in service.
Governor Rendell called the decision to strike before dawn "irresponsible."
