Transit Strike Leaves Bus, Subway Riders Stranded

Getting around Philadelphia is now a bit more challenging. Members of SEPTA's largest transit workers union walked off the job early this morning after talks with the agency broke down. Thousands of commuters were left stranded and looking for other ways to get to work and school. [ SEPTA Service Interruption Guide ]

Negotiations between the two sides broke down around midnight. A difference over wages apparently led to the walkout.
All bus, subway and trolley service in the city, as well as the Frontier Division buses in Bucks, Montgomery and Chester counties, are affected by the strike. SEPTA's Regional Rail service will not be interrupted.
Governor Rendell called the decision to strike before dawn "irresponsible." He said the transit union is "nuts" for going on strike. He said SEPTA made the union of 5,000 transit workers a great offer.
SEPTA said it was offering an 11.5% wage increase over five years, with a $1,250 signing bonus in the first year and increases in workers' pensions.
The union had threatened to strike during the World Series over the weekend. But Rendell ordered negotiators to stay at the bargaining table or risk consequences.
