IRS Looks To Return Nearly $800,000 To Area Taxpayers
If you filed your federal income tax return and haven't gotten your refund check yet, the IRS may be looking for you. The IRS says Post Offices in Berks, Lehigh, and Northampton counties returned nearly $800,000 in refund checks to the U.S. Treasury because the of mailing address mistakes.

The IRS says it can reissue the checks after taxpayers correct or update their address. Internal Revenue Service says it's looking for more than 400 taxpayers in Berks, Lehigh, and Northampton counties who can claim their share of undelivered refund checks.

"Don’t delay if you think you are missing a refund," said David Stewart, Pennsylvania IRS spokesperson. "The sooner you update your address information, the quicker you can get your refund. The IRS makes it easy for taxpayers to update their addresses and claim their refunds on IRS.gov."

The break-out by county, as provided by the IRS, is 166 taxpayers due $289,454 in refunds in Berks County, 177 due $404,966 in Lehigh County, and 66 due $97,825 in Northampton County.

In Pennsylvania, there are nearly 3,200 taxpayers due refunds totaling more than $3.71-million, averaging $1,179 per refund. Nationally, there are 107,831 taxpayers with undelivered refunds, totaling about $124-million.

"I have said this ever since I have been working here, use Direct Deposit and you won’t have to worry about not getting your refund in a timely manner," said Stewart. "It’s simply faster and safer."

Taxpayers can update their addresses with the "Where’s My Refund?" tool on IRS.gov. A taxpayer must submit his or her social security number, filing status and amount of refund shown on their 2008 return. The tool will provide the status of their refund and, in some cases, provide instructions on how to resolve delivery problems. Taxpayers can access a telephone version of "Where’s My Refund?" by calling 1-800-829-1954.
