13 Killed, 30 Hurt In Attack At Army's Fort Hood
The U.S. Army says 13 people were killed and 30 others wounded in a shooting rampage at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas Thursday afternoon. An Army spokesman says the shootings began around 1:30 Central time at a personnel and medical processing center on the base.

Original reports said the alleged gunman in that attack, identified as Major Nidal Malik Hasan, a psychiatrist at Fort Hood, was shot and killed, but officials now say he survived and is in stable condition in the hospital.

Two other soldiers, originally identified as suspects, were taken into custody. They have since been released.

Twelve of the dead were soldiers. One was a civilian contractor.

President Obama was monitoring the situation at the White House. "My immediate thoughts and prayers are with the wounded and with the families of the fallen," said Mr. Obama in a speech Thursday afternoon.

Fort Hood is the Army's largest base, located near the town of Killeen, Texas, halfway between Austin and Waco.

Federal officials report that the alleged gunman was originally brought to their attention at least six months ago because of Internet postings that discussed suicide bombings and other threats.
