Company To Close Waldenbooks, Borders Express Stores
Borders announced plans today to close several of its area Borders Express and Waldenbooks stores. Among the 200 stores across the country that are on the list are Waldenbooks at the South Mall in Lehigh County, the Palmer Park Mall in Northampton County, and the Fairlane Village Mall in Schuylkill County.

A few Borders Express stores in Montgomery County are also scheduled to close. Borders says the closures, expected to happen by the end of January, will mean the elimination of 1,500 jobs. Most of them are part-time. The company, headquartered in Ann Arbor, Michigan, says its goal is to make the chain smaller and more profitable. The closings will leave about 130 Waldenbooks still operating in malls across the country, including a Borders Express store at the Berkshire Mall in Berks County. The company says the closings will not affect any of Borders superstores.
