Moment Of Silence Observed For Fort Hood Massacre Victims

The death toll from a shooting rampage at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas rose from 12 to 13 today. The suspected shooter is in stable condition after being shot four times. Now, investigators are wondering what caused the Army major to turn on his comrades yesterday afternoon. The owner of a convenience store in Texas says the man in surveillance video is U.S. Army Major Nidal Malik Hassan, spotted in the store Thursday morning. Just hours later, Hassan would be named the suspect in a massacre at nearby Fort Hood that left more than a dozen people dead and injured more than 30.
>> Col. John Rossi: Today on Fort Hood we will observe a day of mourning, remembering in our thoughts and prayers the victims of this incident.
The chaotic scene unfolded at the soldier readiness area of the base, where troops prepare for deployment. Hassan, a 39-year-old Army psychiatrist, was said to be struggling with the prospect of his own upcoming deployment overseas, his first. A former neighbor of Hassan's in the Washington, D.C. area said the news came as a surprise.
>> Former Neighbor: I would have never have believed that. Because he seemed so calm, you know. He was never upset with anything whenever I saw him.
At Fort Hood, Army officials credited quick thinking and quick responding soldiers for preventing an already tragic day from ending much worse.
>> Col. Kent Savre, 36th Engineer Brigade Command: There was really some heroic actions that took place at that soldier processing site that I think actually saved lives.
