Bishop A Football Fan: Attends Holy Name Vs. Central Catholic Game
It's the last Friday night of football in the regular season. And the Holy Name Blue Jays took on their fellow Catholic school rival the Central Catholic Cardinals. WFMZ's Pam Cunningham was in the stands, as was the new Bishop of the Allentown Diocese.
>>REPORTER: Catholic football teams usually say a prayer in the locker room before they take the field.

>> REPORTER: What's unusual tonight is who is giving it. Bishop John Barres of the Diocese of Allentown.

>>BISHOP JOHN O. BARRES: I love doing it because you get a chance to see so many people and people are so relax enjoying a good game.

>> REPORTER: And when you have two Catholic teams after one trophy... the Bishop also says a prayer Mid field.

>>ANNIE DICERCHIO: 41 years ago my father passed away and that's what this game is about. It's called the Campbell trophy and it's a traveling trophy so whoever wins that particular year gets to keep the trophy the entire year.

>> REPORTER: Jim Campbell was an inspiration to his family and his players and the Bishop says he hopes he can be an inspiration to young men.

>> BISHOP: We're always on the look out to see if we can sow the seeds of vocations to the priesthood all these wonderful young football players I'd love to ordain them in a few years.

>>BILLY EWART: I think it would help because he would inspire them to do what he does and to be like him.

>> REPORTER: But it's not just about vocations. Since he was ordained a Bishop this summer, he has made it a point to meet the community.

>>BISHOP: This is part of the job description to bring the Gospel to every corner and that includes a football game here in Berks County in Reading.

>> DICERCHIO: I think he's been here quite a bit since he's been appointed and I think it's awesome that he wants to be so active especially in the sports program.
