Reading High School Might Get Courtroom
Reading High School could have a courtroom in it by January, as the school superintendent explained Wednesday afternoon. WFMZ's Pam Cunningham reports.  It's an unusual step to have a courtroom for students inside a school, but school officials say that is the plan they are working on with a Judge from the court system. Reading police officers have been called out to Reading high for bomb threats and fights. To the point where last month the school board decided to increase the number of Reading Police officers at the school full time from two to five.

"Do you feel safe when you go to school everyday?"
"No."  "I feel safe. "
"Why do you feel safe?" "I've lived here for most of my life and I feel really comfortable about everything."

REPORTER: Some students may feel safe, but they now have five officers watching over them, and now the superintendent says a courtroom may be next.

DR. TOM CHAPMAN: And we think this is one piece in an overall strategy to serve our children better.

CAMILO: And everybody is going to be like the kids are so bad they need a courtroom inside Reading High.

REPORTER: Reputation aside, some students are happy with the plan.

IVAN SOTO: There's too much fighting in the school so it is a good idea.

REPORTER: Dr. Chapman says a small percentage of students are involved in fights but recognizes students could feel unsafe.

CHAPMAN: The proposal will have an impact in terms of our desire for safety in our schools we would bring a District Judge up to the high school at least one day a week those details need to be worked out.

REPORTER: While it's an unusual step the superintendent says it should be seen as a positive.

CHAPMAN: This is an asset which we believe can help children thrive.

RAMOS: We already have a worse reputation they put a courtroom in we're going to have a worse reputation then we already do.

REPORTER: School officials are still hammering out the details with court officials. But the courtroom could open up in January and it would be there not just for fights but also to handle students cutting class. Live in Reading, Pam Cunningham 69 News.
