FREEcycling Could Help Cleanup Berks County
Baby clothes, tents, even a piano could all be yours, for the low, low price of nothing. There's now a website where members can give and take items for free and dozens in Berks County are doing it every day.  WFMZ's Joel D. Smith logged on to learned how "freecycling" might be a new way to clean up an old problem.   Colleen Nat We have wanted: A kitchen table. There's an offer of stuffed animals... >> Reporter And there are hundreds of other posts here on freecycle.org. Colleen Lee has been a member of the site for years, but at first she was skeptical of simply picking up someone else's old things. Colleen Lee I figured I'm going to get this really dirty stuff, that's been sitting around or ripped up, but the stuff was in perfect condition, they just didn't need it. >>Rerporter Since then, she's claimed and given away dozens of items, all for free. >>16:35 Joel D. Smith And this can happen fast. Colleen posted this yesterday at 3:55 in the afternoon. by 4:00 she alredy had a number of takers. That's why today, outside her apartment, there it is, the Dora the Explorer Tent and high chair, they're ready to go. >>Reporter Local Freecycle groups now exist worldwide with an estimated 3 million members. The groups are localized though, and it's up to the giver, to decide who gets the goods. >>11:58 Lee If you mention you have something they might bug you until you can't take it anymore, but that doesn't happen very often. >>Reporter Some post items that might seem worthless... while others are trying to move, something that moves. Lee Some even give away cars. And it all just saves it from the junkyard for people that can use it. >>1:05 Rohrbach This is great, I never knew this existed. >>Reporter Given Berks County's recent dumping issues, Crime Alert's Barry Rohrbach hopes freecycling continues to catch on. >>5:01 Rohrbach People will do anything to get rid of trash. This is a new innovation that I see here. >>7:19 Lee I think it's just going to keep growing as word of mouth spreads. >>Reporter Sure there's that, and the lure of 36 empty baby jars. (3:33). Joel D. Smith, 69 News Berks Edition.
