MS Patients "Unmask" Disease Misconceptions with Art
An art project is taking on a higher meaning in Allentown.  MS patients are hoping their creativity will unmask misconceptions about their disease. WFMZ's Eve Tannery explains.   BRETT: I was diagnosed in 1997 and it hit me very suddenly. I was in a wheelchair by 1999.
So neuro-scientist and artist, Dr. Brett Weber... along with some paint and some paint brushes... decided to help *others* battling multiple sclerosis. The disease attacks the central nervous system.
>> BRETT: It can come on with a variety of symptoms that vary...visual problems, walking problems. >> TANNERY: Brett helps lead the art portion of the MS Wellness Program at Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network. >> NATS: Let's try for the best and see what comes up.
Today, patients are using *themselves* as molds to create the "faces of MS."
As you can see, all of the masks are different, and they all reveal a different view of M-S. >
>ED: I decided to go with something different and stick my tongue out. It's like "nah nah" I'm going to beat you. I'm going to beat MS one way or another.
Monica Kuzmin is making two masks. >>MONICA: Happy is before MS - sad after I got diagnosed.
With every brush of paint, the patients are getting a lot more than a piece of art...
>>JERRY: They're able to therapeutically use their minds and be creative. They're able to use their hands for fine motor coordination. >
>ED: By doing this mask, it gives me another way to express myself about MS. >>MONICA: I forget I have MS.
And not only do the masks help the patients, they can also *unmask* a lot of unknowns for the public.
 >>BRETT: Once we finish the artwork, we can go out and show it. It brings awareness to people who may not know what MS is.
Spreading education and healing one face at a time. In Allentown, Eve Tannery, 69 News.
