K.U. President Addresses Teachers' Union, Trustees
Kutztown University's governing body is standing behind the school's president. But members of the faculty union say they will continue to move forward with discussions about a vote of no confidence for President Javier Cevallos. WFMZ's Melissa Batulis was there.

REPORTER: The support from Kutztown's board of trustees was unanimous and quick.

TRUSTEE: Be it resolved that the council of trustees affirms unanimously it's unwavering support for president F. Javier Cevallos.

REPORTER: The board also encouraged the faculty union, APSCUF, to reconsider a potential vote of no confidence against the University President Javier Cevallos.

GAMBONE:We have tried to cooperate. We go through a process and we fail.

REPORTER: Dr. Michael Gambone is leading the charge against Cevallos' leadership. The history professor has been teaching at K-U for 9 years, but his latest concern is with the school's future.

GAMBONE:The academic quality of this place is first. And like I said if you triple the number of students you have in a room, you reduce the amount of access you have.

REPORTER: Among other concerns of rapid growth, the union takes issue with more classes being held in the school's Academic Forum, which can accommodate well over a hundred students per class. In a statement to the campus community, Cevallos points out that the number of classes with less than 20 students has grown as well...and that the university has been working with faculty to help them teach larger groups. Cevallos says, the University's growth in general is a reflection of the population growth of the region.

CEVALLOS: It was not that we wanted to explode and grow. It was just the growth was there for us.

REPORTER: Cevallos and the trustees invited more communication with the faculty union. But the union says those talks have failed them since they first brought up these issues last spring.

GAMBONE: We have endless discussions but no actions.

ORWIG: The concept sir, it's a meet and discuss. The concept is not meet and agree.

REPORTER: Next week...January 31st, here on campus...the public will be asked to weigh in on the issue of no confidence. If the support is there, the entire union will be given the opportunity to vote on Valentine's Day. On the campus of Kutztown University, Melissa Batulis, 69 News Berks Edition.
