Mad for Shad: Fishers Find Fun at Tournament on Delaware
The largest Shad fishing tournament in the country is in the Lehigh Valley this week. It's not exactly perfect out there for the rest of us, but it is good fishing weather. WFMZ's Stephanie Esposito has the story.  This tournament draws people from all over the country because its so big. Around 700 people are registered so far. The Shad haven't really been biting but people I talked to don't mind! MARK: Shad is a fish that once a year laves the ocean and swims up whatever excuary it is. In this case its the delaware river. >> REPORTER: The Sollidays also travel north to this spot every year for vacation and a healthy fishing competition. DOROTHY: My husband likes to do it and since he's had his heart transplant thats what he does. HAROLD: Have you been doing this for a long time? Yeah Ever since I could walk. >> REPORTER: Arthur Villanueva and his two boys were also on the Easton side of the Delaware today. ARTHUR: The fun thing is me and my son have a good time together. Its a father and son thing. >> The thing I don't like about fishing is this! >> REPORTER: Even a tangled line and a little chilly weather didn't keep these families inside. Even so, their wasn't much action today. >> They're down in trenton so it might be a couple days before they get here. >> REPORTER: But there were a few good catches yesterday. That is a fish! Who caught that? >> REPORTER: So I wondered if anyone had any superstitions. Do you have a lucky hat or lucky socks? Nope! >> We just keep moving, relocating. What about the guys that go in? Is there a difference? No They're not catching nothing either! ARTHUR: That's the thing. We have a good time. We catch or we don't catch. We have a good time. óStephanie Espositoó >> The tournament ends a week from today with a cook out, festival and parade. The Grand prize, for whoever catches the biggest Shad this week is 15 hundred bucks....not to bad!
