Homeowners Rally at State Capitol over School Property Taxes
Some call it a broken record. But others are singing a new tune when it comes to the elimination of school property taxes. Once again today, hundreds were rallying at the capitol to find relief. WFMZ's Joel D. Smith was there, and has more on why this time...the outcome might finally be different.
  >>Reporter: They come with an agenda, with growing support, craving reform. And that's just the politicians. >>Folmer Eliminating property taxes is not an idea who's time has come, its an idea that's long overdue. Clap.. >>Reporter: It's what they want to hear, but it's also what they're used to hearing. .>> Joel D. Smith A lot of these same words have been said before, said by a lot of these same politicians. But a lot of people out here this time are thinking maybe, because they're here, this time it could be different. >>Rodney Miller: I've seen the same faces as before, the leaders, but I've seen new faces getting on board that see the problem growing, not shrinking. >> Rorher: Now you're talking about something far differently than last year when they were maybe running out of money, they have run out and that's the difference. >>Reporter The idea was voted down in January, but since then changes have been made. Now things like clothing and food would remain tax-free. And only primary homes would get the tax relief, not businesses. >>Kessler We're talking about 5.6 bill dollars now to come up with as opposed to 11-12 billion dollars and this is definitely more feasible. >> David Balldinger Thoroughly vetted legislation, bi- partisan bill that addresses the concern of both parties. Broad tax payer support, and a promise from the governor that he will sign tax bill 1275 into law. There can be no more excuses. applause. >>Reporter Leaders think they have more support now than in January... and soon they'll have a chance to prove it. House Bill 1275 should come up for a vote by the end of the month. In Harrisburg, Joel D. Smith, 69 News Berks Edition.
