Donyell Marshall Trading Ball For Whistle
Donyell Marshall is putting on his annual basketball camp this week at Penn State Berks... This week he's doing double duty because his AAU team is also in town getting ready for a tournament this weekend in Las Vegas... This is my first year actually being hands on a coaching and stuff... you actually have to take a test to be certified and I took it the other day so I'm goign to be a coach on the bench. You look at Donyell and that's everything you want to become as a basketball player a 15 year NBA veteran... It's cool that he's going to coach us in Las Vegas so I just try to take in everything he says and learn from it. A nucleus of Marshall's team is from the area... but other players are from as far away as Mississippi... Donyell pays for all the players plane tickets... gear and tournaments... It's undescribable... he plays pick up with us... he practices with us and our practices now he says is just like an NBA training camp so he really cares about us and our basketball future... The kids are on the team to play basketball... but they have to do more than hit jump shots... This is before you even touch a basketball... you have to show him your grades and make sure your head is on straight before you can even touch a basketball on this team. I told them the best complement I can get from all of this is when they sign that letter of intent to go to college. Donyell is learning too... He realizes he only has a few years left in his playing career... coaching is something i want to do so this is preparing me for that... How to deal with dividing up minutes and how to deal with different attitudes so it's really helping me out. Donyell was traded to Seattle at the deadline last season... The Sonics are now moving to Oklahoma City... so it's been a whirlwind year...
