Exeter Cardinals Dedicate Season to Fallen Honorary Team Member


>> (Cheering) >> REPORTER: As the Exeter Cardinals played for the league championship title, their enthusiastic cheers held extra emotion. >> CAMPBELL: We're going to win this one for Dylan and his family. >> BROWN: We ain't messing around tonight. >> REPORTER: Cardinals first base coach Bob Brown's 16-year-old son, Dylan, was diagnosed with cancer on September 11th, 2006. It was a battle he lost last week. >> BROWN: It was just a ride over the last two years with Dylan got progressively worse. >> REPORTER: As Dylan's health declined, friends looked for ways to include him in typical teen activities...like summer league at Pineland Park. >> HAYES: I was like you know what? You should come sit on our bench for some of our games. You know...kind of be a pick me up for him. >> REPORTER: From then on, the players say Dylan was at almost every game. And for this game, the team wanted to make sure it was no different. >> BROWN: He was part of the team, an honorary captain for us. >> REPORTER: And what started out as a pick me up for Dylan...quickly helped the Cardinals take flight. >> HAYES: If you strike out or make an error, of course you're going to be mad. But when you come back to the dug out and you see him sitting there in his wheelchair you know it's not the most important thing. The most important thing is life. He taught us that. >> REPORTER: With an unprecedented perfect season under their belts and just three days after Dylan's funeral, the Cardinals suited up for one more game. >> Dylan on three. 1...2...3...Dylan! >> REPORTER: The inspiration stayed close and the Cardinals shut out their opponent seven to nothing...and accomplished a record that bested every league team over the past 40 years. And they did it for Dylan. >> BROWN: The way it just played out was just unbelievable. I think I'm going to adopt everyone of them...yeah, I think I am. >> REPORTER: In Exeter Township, Melissa Batulis, 69 News Berks Edition.
