College Breaks Ground on "Green" Building in Upper Bucks
Bucks County Community College's Upper Bucks Campus is growing... and growing "green." The school broke ground on an environmentally-friendly, 26,000 square-foot addition to its campus in East Rockhill Township today.

The project's architect says the building will have a geothermal heating system, tinted and insulated windows, and rooftop vegetation. The latter will reduce rainwater runoff and help cool the building. School officials say the addition, connected to the campus' existing building, will feature more classrooms, including a nursing lab, biology-chemistry lab, a computer lab, and a learning studio. An outdoor plaza can also serve as an amphitheater.

"While we offer six complete associate degrees at Upper Bucks, many students must travel to the Newtown campus to complete other requirements," says Catherine McElroy, Dean of Academic and Curricular Services. "The addition of classrooms and a science laboratory at UBC will allow the college to expand program offerings on this campus."

BCCC officials say the number of students enrolled at the Upper Bucks Campus has increased fourfold since it was established in 1999. The expansion is scheduled to be completed by early 2010.
