One Tank Trip: Earl Poole Sanctuary
Next time you take out a map to plan a trip.. you might want to look closer to home. WFMZ's Karin Mallett found a sanctuary you've probably driven right by without knowing it. We'll take you there in tonight's One Tank Trip: In Your Backyard.

Listen closely, you'll hear the birds that take up residence here. Beckoning you to share the space at Earl Poole Sanctuary in Alsace Township.

>>KIM LEWIS: I know personally when I come out to a place like this.. all my troubles... I mean I know they are still there, but I just know I feel peaceful, I feel better.

>>REPORTER: Even if you take a walk here by yourself.. you're never really alone. If follow the trail long enough, you'll come across this pool.. home to the sanctuary's frogs. Spring has sprung on the 40 acres here.. but they aren't so easy to find. The entrance is along Antietam Road..

>>LEWIS: You come down the road and unless you really know about it you don't stop.

>>REPORTER: If you do.. you'll find an old barn and a few hiking trails. Wildflowers that have been hiding underground from winter's cold breath.. now finally beginning to emerge.

>>LEWIS: This time of year you can see everything starting to bloom.

>>REPORTER: The time of year perhaps Earl Poole would have liked best. He's the one this place is named after.. an ornithologist and author.

>>LEWIS: Earl Poole was an expert on birds and he was an artist. He did the drawings in a lot of bird illustration books.

>>REPORTER: There used to be a home on the property.. and here's what the barn used to look like. Abandoned now but still in pretty good shape..

>>LEWIS: We envision someday to do something with the barn. I know the bats would be very sad if we tore it down.

>>REPORTER: It's a place to take a walk, even if you only have a few minutes in your day. Soaking up spring on a One Tank Trip to the Earl Poole Sanctuary, Karin Mallett 69 News Berks Edition.
