Marbles Tournaments Crown Winners, Runners-up
Marbles were moving around in Reading over the weekend. The 87th annual Reading Marbles Tournament, the longest continually-running children's sporting event in the country, was held at the 3rd and Spruce Recreation Center on Saturday.

That was followed by the Berks County Marbles Tournament on Sunday. The two tournaments had to squeeze everything into just two days this year because of a lack of sponsorship. Organizers are still seeking sponsors to help send the seven winners and runners-up to the National Marbles Tournament in Wildwood, New Jersey next month. If you're interested, you can e-mail Mibsterwon@aol.com.

Seth Schaeffer, a 13-year-old student at Southern Middle School in Reading, was the city's boys champion. Jared Long, an 11-year-old student at 16th and Haak Elementary, was runner-up. Both are tournament veterans.

Shakira Ortiz, a 12-year-old student at the Gateway School for Performing Arts, was the city's girls champion. She's a former city champ and runner-up. Kiara Ortiz, a 13-year-old at Southwest Middle School, was runner-up. Both girls have played in the National Marbles Tournament.

Whitney Lapic, a 13-year-old student at Governor Mifflin Middle School, was the county's girls champion. She's a six-time Berks County champion.

Shane Hoover, an eight-year-old student at Jacksonwald Elementary School in Exeter Township, was the county's boys champion. He's a two-time county champion. McKinley Hoover, an 11-year-old student at Reiffton School in Exeter Township, was the runner-up.
